The Organization

The mission of the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is: No One Goes Hungry in Central & Eastern North Carolina.

Established in 1980, the Food Bank is a nonprofit organization that has provided food for people at risk of hunger in 34 counties for over 35 years. The Food Bank serves a network of more than 800 partner agencies such as soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and programs for children and adults through distribution centers in Durham, Greenville, New Bern, Raleigh, the Sandhills (Southern Pines) and Wilmington. In FY2018, the Food Bank distributed 68.3 million pounds of food (nearly 58 million meals) to working families, individuals, children, and seniors in our service area.

The Candidate

The Vice President of Finance will be an experienced manager with excellent judgement, conceptual skills, and the ability to focus on issues of highest priority. The individual must be results oriented, energetic and possess strong communication skills.

The Position

The Vice President of Finance has overall responsibility for administering all quantifiable and qualitative financial and accounting policies, procedures, and all related systems for the financial health of the organization. This position oversees the Finance Department, serves on the Executive Management Team and staffs the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop, implement and oversee strategy and planning for the longer term financial future of the organization.
  • Lead in fiscal management, fiscal ethics and demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
  • Formulate and recommend fiscal policies.
  • Maintain timely and accurate financial reporting and interpret operating results clearly to President/CEO, management and Finance Committee.
  • Develop, implement and oversee a financial reporting system with emphasis on internal and operating controls, including planning and budgeting, operational analysis, and cash management.
  • Manage the financial staff relating to all accounting functions, financial planning, operating budgets, grant expenditures, and database entry with timely and accurate input.
  • Handle with various finance department staff timely and accurate reports for other department needs.
  • Monitor monthly agency services balances and follow through on balances over 60 days past due and insufficient checks.
  • Ensure financial compliance and reporting with all appropriate governmental units, agencies and grantors.
  • Oversee any contractual agreements/language for organization prior to approval.
  • Prepare schedules and other information requested by auditors for completion of timely audited financial statements, Form 990, and solicitation license.
  • Develop and maintain harmonious relationships with auditors, banking institutions, the members of the Finance and Audit Committee, the Board of Directors and other financial entities as appropriate.
  • Stay abreast with changes to any financial regularities and communicate/execute as required.
  • Ensure all Feeding America financial compliance/reporting requirements are met.
  • Participate and engage as member of Executive Management Team. Ensure culture, communications, and processes are well integrated. Be one voice from leadership team.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by President/CEO.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: BA/BS degree in business administration or accounting with at least five years of relevant experience, preferably with a non-profit agency or public accounting firm, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current NC licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred. A strong financial and accounting background, with specific knowledge of financial reporting, planning and internal control systems, cash management and general accounting activities is required.
