The Organization

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern North Carolina grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Wishes provide hope, strength and joy to children and families during one of the most difficult and frightening times of their lives. Children are empowered by a wish – by imagining it, describing it, planning, and anticipating it. A wish can encourage a child to have hope for the future and strength to take on incredible challenges.

The organization was originally founded in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona by a group of caring volunteers who helped a young boy fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer. The Foundation is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world with 64 chapters in the United States and its territories. Since its founding the Make-A-Wish Foundation has granted more than 250,000 wishes world-wide to children between the ages of 2-l/2 and 18 years old. Today, the Foundation grants a wish every 40 minutes.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Eastern North Carolina was founded 24 years ago to serve the children who live in the 49 counties in North Carolina east of the Orange/Alamance county line.

Operating as an independent 501(c) tax exempt organization they finance their work through the generous contributions of individuals, corporate sponsorships, planned gifts and grants. They do not receive funding from federal, state or local government programs. In-kind donations of goods and services such as frequent flier miles and hotel loyalty points also help finance the Foundation’s mission.

Since 1986, over 2,100 children in eastern North Carolina have received an unforgettable wish experience. All members of the wish kid’s immediate family take part in the wish whenever possible, and all wish expenses are fully covered by the Foundation – giving the wish kids and family a respite from the stress of dealing with a life-threatening medical condition.

In the fiscal year which concluded August 31, 2010, the eastern North Carolina chapter granted 185 wishes, an increase of 14% over the prior year. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina estimates that nearly 400 children are diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition annually that live within the 49 counties they serve. Thus, significant potential exists to expand and grow the mission and bring smiles to hundreds of children and their families.

The chapter was recently recognized by the national organization for significant achievement in fundraising and wish granting and as one of only four chapters in the country to achieve growth in both areas during FY10. Recognized for her role in the organization’s success, the current CEO has accepted a promotion to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America national organization. As such, the CEO position for the chapter is available for a dynamic individual to continue the growth and and take the chapter to the next level
