Capability Company is a search firm dedicated solely to executive searches for nonprofit organizations. Founded in early 2002 by long-time fundraising professional, Rebecca Worters, Capability Company has rapidly grown in size and scope. Its national and international reach, progressive marketing techniques and streamlined structure allow it to respond quickly and effectively in an ever-changing marketplace.


The organization is staffed by a close-knit group of highly-trained independent contractors with extensive experience in nonprofit management, located in North Carolina and Indianapolis. Over the years, the company has delivered high-quality search services to every type of organization, including educational, health, environmental and arts.

Capability Company is poised to grow exponentially over the next five years, with solid name recognition and web presence in its target markets. The company is focusing marketing efforts on higher education institutions and hospitals and will expand into this market aggressively in the next two years.

Part of the Capability Company mission is to treat all its contractors well by providing help, training and support. The working environmental is unstructured, allowing contractors to determine work hours and work environment.

Capability Company contractors work from their own homes or offices and provide their own computer equipment and high-speed internet connectivity. Capability Company provides contractors with a company telephone line, email address and business cards.

Capability Company has invested heavily in web-based technology that allows intense collaboration between contractors and offers computer software support related to contractor job functions.

The Area

The Triangle area of North Carolina includes Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Located within the area are the Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Research Triangle Park, home to corporate giants and the destination for many corporate relocations.

Geographically, the Triangle is located in the center of North Carolina with only short drives to both the beaches and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The climate is mild with an average high of 88 degrees in mid-summer and 52 degrees in mid-winter. North Carolina is noted for its beautiful countryside, rivers, sounds and forests.

The Triangle is an area of outstanding educational resources offering seventeen universities and colleges, including two other major research universities with which North Carolina State University has strong collaborations. North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, the state capital, and is a comprehensive university known for its leadership in education and research, and globally recognized for its science, technology, engineering and mathematics leadership.

The Triangle is also an area of tremendous resources where cultural and performing arts organizations thrive. Major institutions include the North Carolina Symphony, North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina Museum of History, Ackland Art Museum, Nasher Museum of Art, Museum of Natural Sciences, Carolina Ballet, the Opera Company of North Carolina, North Carolina Theatre, and American Dance Festival.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will be, in short, a go-getter. This person must have excellent written communication and oral presentation skills, and understand the dynamics involved in successful fundraising.

He or she must be a strategic thinker with strong organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as a professional and friendly affect. This person will think ahead and develop key contacts through smart networking. Existing connections within the fundraising profession are preferred.

This position requires strong personal initiative and interest in a long-term investment in the company. The successful candidate will focus on building new client relationships, developing leads, closing sales, nurturing ongoing relationships with clients and tracking all sales and networking activities.

He or she must enjoy business development strategy and implementation. Experience working with nonprofits, specifically in hospitals and higher education institutions, is important.

The successful candidate will be computer savvy, email responsive and technologically advanced, especially in the realm of web-based collaborative platforms and online social networking such as Linked-in.

The Director of Business Development serves in a key role in the organization, requiring an individual with a solid background in nonprofit marketing and sales. This individual must have an interest in growing an already successful search firm and working in tandem with a dedicated team of individual contractors.

The Position

The Director of Business Development will report to the President, and will work to develop relationships resulting in contracts for services. The Director is responsible for developing relationships with university, hospital and nonprofit leaders that result in increased business.

This opportunity is optimal for a person who has confidence in his or her ability to be a strong ambassador for Capability Company--especially within the fundraising profession. A generous commission structure will allow the right person to earn substantial income within eighteen months of beginning work. Capability Company will cover up-front costs for travel and conference attendance in advance. If you are in need of a regular paycheck next week, this is not the position for you. The Director will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward through the sales process. As a member of the Capability Company team, the Director will work collaboratively with other professionals to successfully acquire contracts and monitor client satisfaction throughout the search process.

The Director will also assist in providing direction for the organization in terms of sales strategy. This individual will work closely with team members in developing external relationships with potential and existing clients. All functions require independent initiative as well as close collaboration with internal team members, professional association members, and colleagues.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Cultivate new business for Capability Company, and grow relationships with clients
  • Actively network with nonprofit professionals, university leaders and hospital executives
  • Seek out new opportunities by following up on referrals and inquiries
  • Make key appointments and sales calls that result in new business
  • Lead company-wide outreach and sales strategy development
  • Assist the Director of Marketing in developing and executing company promotional strategies leading to client acquisition opportunities
  • Work with the Director of Marketing to develop sales proposals, including pricing out new business opportunities
  • Make sales presentations along with senior staff
  • Execute contracts; ensure a smooth transition of new clients from a sales experience to a services and support experience
  • Attend monthly contractor conference calls

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college;
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in business development and/or fund raising, preferably at a higher education institution or hospital facility;
  • Exceptional writing, organizational and communication skills;
  • The ability to work credibly with nonprofit leaders, university development staff, and hospital executives;
  • Ability to travel up to four days per month on average, make sales and/or conference presentations and attend national and local conferences;
  • Ability to closely track activities through online collaborative software and report progress weekly
